The Business Case

The website was their shop window but the messaging was out of date, the architeure was confusing, it didn't capture the data that it needed to, and the visuals needed updating.

The user journey was confusing and that was the initial reason for redesign. The visuals and the messaging were also out of date.

Analytics supported my suggestion that the user journey was confusing, I used that to support my business case to the senior team.

The Project

Use an Agency or do it in-house?

AutoEntry had many talented developers but we needed the expertise of an agency that could help us with research, user journies, SEO etc. We also had some branding questions that they could help us with.

In the end we used two agencies, one for design, the other for build.

Stay with Webflow or use another platform?

We had a UX person that was updating the website in Webflow; moving to another platform would have resulted in a significant amount of work. I asked the UX person for an overview of how Webflow works, it was pretty straight forward and so this became a requirement for the project.

The design agency we used (Piquant) developed all of their websites on another platform but were happy to do all of the design work and then pass it off to another agency to build.

I thought that using two agencies might be problematic and expensive, but after a couple of phonecalls it was going to be cheaper and faster than the other quotes we received.

Finance/Budget

We were a small department with a very modest budget and I wanted to try and be clever about the spend.

I read an article that said that website could be treated as a buiness asset and not purely a marketing department spend.

I put this to our finance person and they were able to help us with that. Delighted!

Content

We had a talented copywriter in house and so we simply worked our way through what we had on the current site, made everything read a lot more naturally.

We flagged possible messaging issues and discussed those with the product team. This was a really valuable piece of work and a lot of actions came from this for the product team.Proof again that a good copywriter is worth their weight in gold, the entire rewrite took about 2 weeks.

Architecture

This was one of the key areas to work on. I had spoken to a number of customers while looking for case studies, and I took the time to ask about navigating around the site.

There was a pretty consistent message saying that it wasn't always clear. I worked closely with the product team as well as sales on this and everybody was happy with this more simplified layout.

Design

Worked closely with the design team in the agency.

Their design portfolio was really strong and was the primary reason why I reached out to them. The website needed a refresh and so the design elements were really important.

I had a background in design, we had an inhouse graphic designer... so we were confident we would come up with something that looked fresh and worked well.

Built everything in Pardot

The current website was designed in Webflow and we had a small UX team that were used to working on that platform. The creative agency that we really wanted to work with didn't work with Webflow and so I found a great webflow developer and he was happy to work off the designs provided by the agency.

I set up a call between the two so that they could answer any design questions, that was really quick and the build took just over a week!

Results, lessons learned

Buy-in from senior team

This project went really smoothly. I knew who I wanted to work with and they were available; that was important.

What was more important though was that I had buy-in from the senior team. We needed to create a suite of bespoke videos for this project and I need to get a lot of time from the product mananger. This would definitely not have happened without the support of the senior team.

Choosing the right team

I knew exactly who I wanted to work with. I had worked with them a few times before and we shared a very similar view of how things should work and look. They all appreciated the value of what we were doing and so the creative part of this project was really easy (and fun).
